St. John's Chapel Renovation Fund

Fr. John Fogliasso inspects an aging chapel

St. John’s Chapel has always been a part of Newman University’s campus and throughout the year it plays host to many Masses, confessions, services and special events.

The chapel has been outdated and in need of mending for some time now.

In June 2014, Father John Fogliasso became the Newman University Chaplain and quickly noticed the chapel’s state of disrepair. He said, “The pews cover just over half the chapel with chairs filling the rear portion, paint is chipping off of the wall, the carpet was riddled with stains, Confessions were heard in a utility closet, stained-glass windows are bowing, and the sanctuary is a large, empty area that appears dark and removed from the congregation.”

With the help of students, the Sisters of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, staff, faculty and administration, issues such as the confessional and carpet have been taken care of.

The design committee for the new renovations will respect the history of St. John’s Chapel and the artifacts it holds in their planning.

The new renovation plans include new pews that will reach the back of the chapel, new paint, the plaster will be fixed and the alter will become handicap accessible.

Father Fogliasso said, “I’m most looking forward to seeing the chapel in a condition that is more suitable for the sacred celebration that takes place within. Having a space that is in prime condition, where the design helps foster a spirit of prayer and contemplation, is exciting to anticipate.”
